A video on Facebook shows the moment that triple homicide suspect 19-year-old Matthew Bernard charged at police and strangled the Keeling Baptist Church caretaker before being taken into custody.
Matthew Bernard Suspected Of Triple Homicide
On Tuesday afternoon, Pittsylvania County Sheriff Mike Taylor addressed the media following a triple homicide on Keeling Drive. The first responding officer was on the scene within 12 minutes of receiving the call. As he approached the residence he found a dead woman in the driveway.
Two other victims, a woman and child, were found inside the home. It was later said the victims are Bernard’s mother, sister, niece and a dog according to his uncle. According to his uncle, Bernard was a student at Danville Community College who regularly attended church. A motive behind the triple murder it is not known at this point.
Earlier in the morning, the Pittsylvania County Public Safety Facebook page made a post warning citizens be on the lookout for Bernard who was believed to have been armed with a rifle. The post was later updated after Bernard was taken into custody.

On Tuesday evening WZTV FOX 17 News, Nashville posted a video to their Facebook page showing the moment Bernard was arrested. In the video Bernard is seen chasing a deputy as he tries to pepper spray him. Bernard then runs over and begins strangling the church caretaker. Once the officer gets close enough to swing his baton at Bernard he runs back off down the road.
After running down the road Bernard is stopped by deputies and a K-9 unit who manage to subdue him and end the situation. By the end of the video there is a large police presence and Bernard is placed into the back of a patrol vehicle. It was reported that Bernard was seen banging his head inside of the police car. Eight Pittsylvania County schools were placed on a Code Orange lockdown until Bernard was caught. After he was taken into custody the lockdown was lifted.
