- A letter sent to Secretary of State Mike Pompeo gave until Thursday to deliver documents related to President Donald Trump’s talks with Ukrain
- Pompeo has already ignored a request for related documents make on September 9 with a deadline of September 16
- The letter claims both Trump and his personal attorney Rudy Giuliani have made concerning statements recently in regards to Ukraine
Secretary of State Mike Pompeo has been subpoenaed by three House committees concerning the current impeachment inquiry and his failure to produce documents on Ukraine.
Pompeo is known as perhaps President Donald Trump’s closest Cabinet member on a personal level. On September 23 the chairs of House committees for Foreign Affairs, Intelligence and Oversight and Reform sent Pompeo a letter that requests documents regarding Trump, his lawyer Rudy Giuliani and the Ukranian government.
The letter shows the State Department failed to comply with a request for the documents made on September 9. The Department was given until September 16 to comply, which they did not. Instead on September 20, the State Department sent an email claiming were reviewing the requests without an indication of when or if they will comply with the House committee requests.
The letter accuses Trump of enlisting a foreign actor to interfere with an American election. “Yet the President and his personal attorney (Rudy Giuliani) now appear to be openly engaging in precisely this type of abuse of involving the Ukranian government ahead of the 2020 election,” the letter reads.
The FBI Director Is Wrong
The letter goes on to read that on May 7 FBI Director Christopher Wray testified before the Senate that “any public official or member of any campaign” needed to immediately report to the FBI any conversations between foreign actors regarding any “influencing or interfering with our election.” His demand followed two reports from the Officer of the Director of National Intelligence and the Office of Special Counsel Robert Mueller that found Russian influence in favor of Trump in the 2016 elections.
On June 12, Trump dismissed the warning and said, “The FBI Director is wrong.” Trump went on to say he would consider accepting information on a political opponent from a foreign power. The president went on to say he would accept the information without alerting the FBI. He would letter defend that statement.
The Chair of the Federal Election Commission issued the following statement the next day:
Let me make something 100% clear to the American Public and anyone running for public office: it is illegal for any person to solicit, accept, or receive anything of value from a foreign national in connection with a u.s. election. this is not a novel concept. election intervention from foreign governments has been considered unacceptable since the beginnings of our nation.Federal Election Commission Chair Ellen L. Weintraub
The three House committees accuse both Trump and Giuliani of making statements that have “shifted” on their stance concerning talks urging Ukranian President Volodymyr Zelensky to investigate 2020 presidential candidate Joe Biden’s son. Trump admitted to talking about the debunked conspiracy theory linking Biden to corruption in Ukraine during a phone call with Zelensky on July 25.
if press reports are accurate, such corrupt use of presidential power for the president’s personal political interest—and not for the national interest—is a betrayal of the President’s oath of office and cannot go unchecked.Letter To Mike Pompeo
Experts including the U.S. Embassy in Kiev have repeatedly shown concerns over Giuliani’s relationship with Ukranian officials. Giuliani is Trump’s personal attorney and has absolutely no role in government but on August 22, the State Department “played a direct role” in arranging a meeting between him and representatives of Zelensky. Reports have claimed Giuliani debriefed two senior State Department officials about his meetings with Ukranian officials.
The State Department was given by the close of business on Thursday. The letter warned if Pompeo’s department did not comply that compulsory process would begin this week unless the Department provided the requested documents.
Please inform the Committees by close of business on thursday, september 26, 2019, whether you intend to fully comply with these requests or whether subpoenas will be NECESSARY.Letter To Mike Pompeo
