Rick And Morty’s Cult Following Revived The Promotional McDonald’s Szechaun Sauce For Mulan
It is no question that Rick and Morty developed a monstrous cult following. The show’s popularity seemed to really go to the next level during the close to two-year break between Season 2 and 3. Rick and Morty got big enough that McDonald’s took notice and brought back their treasured Szechuan Sauce.
In Season 3 Rick referred to McDonald’s Szechuan Sauce as his “one-armed man” while freaking out on Morty about their upcoming adventures. Rick confessed everything the two had done up to that point — and everything to come — is for the popular discontinued limited time dipping sauce.
When Disney’s Mulan was released in 1998, McDonald’s released the promotional Szechuan Sauce. Nearly twenty years later, Rick and Morty created such a buzz for Szechaun Sauce McDonald’s actually brought the sauce back for a one-day event in some stores.
“In addition, after nearly 20 years (and perhaps a bit of time travel) we’re even doing the impossible…” McDonald’s wrote on their website in 2017 when Szechaun Sauce made its return. Surprisingly, aside from the mention of time travel, McDonald’s did not specifically give any credit to Rick and Morty.
McDonald’s Did Not Directly Mention Rick And Morty
A poster was placed on McDonald’s website that had a similar style of animation to Rick and Morty. There was speculation that either McDonald’s saw an opportunity to profit off the free marketing from the popular cartoon or that they did not receive the proper authorization from Turner Broadcasting and Time Warner, the owners of Adult Swim.
We did not partner with Justin Roiland/Rick and Morty for the Szechuan Sauce poster. Justin Roiland and the Rick and Morty show have had a lot of enthusiasm for our Szechuan Sauce. In fact, this year it became a pop culture phenomenon. We took inspiration from their passion and we just couldn’t resist bringing back the sauce in limited quantities for our customers to enjoy for the first time since 1998.McDonald’s Via Inverse
While the first revival of the sauce after almost twenty years only lasted one day, October 7, 2017, the sauce has truly grown its own cult following thanks to Rick’s obsession. In February 2018 the McDonald’s announced “20 MILLION SZECHUAN SAUCE CUPS NOW AVAILABLE NATIONWIDE!🚨 FINALLY get the sauce!🎉 Celebrate w/ some Buttermilk Crispy Tenders (or other qual. purch.), a cup of Szechuan, and The Sauce: a podcast about the surreal, true Szechuan story.”
Over a year after the last time the beloved Szechaun Sauce was available at McDonald’s, Ebay currently has 1,470 search results for Sezchaun Sauce. Many of the sauce packets listed have Rick and Morty related material in the pictures. The single-serving sauce containers are currently selling for roughly $3.00 apiece.
Adult Swim Wanted 70 More Episodes Of Rick And Morty
In May of last year, Rick and Morty fans rejoiced when the show’s co-creator Justin Rolland tweeted that Adult Swim had requested 70 more episodes. While it is not clear how many seasons that equates to, the show’s co-creator Dan Harmon has said in the past the upcoming Season 4 would be 14 episodes. During Rick’s Szechaun Sauce rant he did say he would hunt for the sauce even if it took him nine seasons.
